"In the Beginning" Comes to Sight and Sound

3/31/2007 - On Thursday, March 29 the long awaited day finally arrived. Sight and Sound theatre in Strasburg opened its production of “In the Beginning.” The show tells the story of the creation of the world, animals, and man. Sight and Sound owner, Glenn Eshelman had been dreaming of staging the production for 30 years.
Upon arrival at the show, tourists, locals, and a few Mennonites crowded toward the entrance doors in hopes of finding a good seat. This was weird because most of them had tickets with seat numbers on them. When they finally got in and sat down they were amazed at how good the show was. The visual effects were breathtaking and the angels sang a lot of songs. Every one held their breath when Adam was created because they wanted to see if he’d walk around naked. The problem was solved when God clothed him with a cloak of righteousness. Adam ran around the garden and named all the animals. There were a lot of animals. Some fake and some real. Most of the real ones ran across the stage at a high rate of speed. They seemed scared to be in front of everybody. One sheep, however, walked around the stage like he she owned it. Evidently she enjoyed being the center of attention. There was also a baby elephant who was played by an actor who ran around and had a hard time keeping his forelegs on the floor.
The only bad animal was the serpent, who was purple and could talk. Eventually he sold his soul to Satan, who was thrown out of heaven, and convinced Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Eve believed him even though he looked really creepy and had glowing red eyes. Then she felt so bad she convinced her husband to also eat. The fruit was huge and it was amazing they could even sink their teeth into it. When they ate the fruit they lost their cloaks and hid behind a bush and made some clothes out of leaves. Then they put on some sheep skin and got thrown out of the garden.
At one point the show stopped and a voice said there's been technical issues and so everyone sat there stunned. On tourist quipped, “This has never happened in all the years I’ve been coming here.”
People took this opportunity to look around and eat candy bars. All the tourists that were sitting close to Amish Mennonites or Mennonites immediately attacked them and started asking them questions about Lancaster County.
Finally the show resumed and followed Adam and Eve as they tried to build a life outside the garden. Adam loved Abel more than Cain so Cain got mad at Abel. Eve birthed 43 children and they married their brothers and sisters and had big families. Then half the family got mad at Adam and left. In the end Cain killed Abel with a big stick and ran away.
800 years later the show finally ended. Adam died and Eve cried and all the audience could hardly wait to run out to their cars and leave. It was evident that man has fallen by the mass of people charging to the parking lot and sitting there waiting to get out. They yelled at each other and cut each other off as they headed out the driveway.
All in all the show is very good, the acting is superb, the special effects are amazing, and if you can brave the crowds you will have a good time if you go see it.  (IL Wagler, BIHN)
