Beards and Mustaches to grow or not to grow

Church Shopping 5/16/07

In Response to my Beard Column I received the following questions. If anyone knows the answers let me know. I'm trying to do some research to find out, but I've been busy in the fields and I'm trying to learn how to use my new Laptop. I really don't like traveling north of 23. Beardless Mennonites scare me.

1. Why do some Beachys require mustaches along w/ the beard?
2. Why are said Beachys allowed to preach in pulpits that do not allow mustaches, and no-mustache Beachys are allowed to preach in mustache pulpits?
3. Why, if the beards are modeled after Menno Simons, do all "Mennonites" north of 23 (Hornings and ex-Hornings like Mid-Atlantics) require a clean-shaven face? (Note: while these are not generally asked to preach in beard pulpits, they do contribute in other ways so that there is still a general mixing of facial hair requirements in such organizations as CAM.)

Ivan Yoder is a 29 year old Witmer resident. He used to be Amish but now he is in the ban because he wouldn't quit driving. As a young married man, he put his keys away and bought a buggy, but horses disgust him so much he started driving again. Currently he's attending an Amish Mennonite church with hopes of membership someday. He has a wife and 2 young daughters and a son. His interests include working, softball, Amish and Mennonite history, and shetland ponies. He is a graduate of Creekhill Amish School. Milky Ways are his favorite candybars.
